What Is Website Accessibility?

Website accessibility is the practice of ensuring that websites are designed and developed in a way that makes them usable and navigable for everyone. It involves creating digital environments that enable all users, including those with disabilities, to perceive, understand, interact with, and navigate websites effectively.

Accessibility considerations encompass a wide range of disabilities, including auditory, cognitive, physical, neurological, and visual impairments. It's worth noting that accessibility also benefits individuals with temporary impairments, such as someone recovering from surgery or dealing with a broken arm.

Why Is Accessibility Important?

Website accessibility should be a paramount concern for anyone involved in SEO, as well as for designers and developers collaborating on website projects.

An accessible website enhances the experience of all users by making it easier for them to navigate, interact with content, and find the information they seek. Furthermore, in many cases, web accessibility is a legal requirement.

The 4 Principles of Accessibility

To be considered accessible, a website must adhere to four core principles, often referred to as "POUR":

  1. Perceivable: This principle emphasises the removal of barriers that might hinder a user from accessing content. It involves actions such as providing text alternatives for non-text content and ensuring a logical content structure.

  2. Operable: Operability focuses on user interface and navigation, ensuring that the website is usable across different devices. It also involves allowing users sufficient time to complete tasks.

  3. Understandable: Users must be able to comprehend the information presented on a webpage, understand the user interface, and easily navigate the site. Predictable and consistent navigation is key to this principle.

  4. Robust: A robust website is one that can be accessed and interpreted by various technologies and platforms, including screen readers. It should maintain accessibility even as platforms and technologies evolve.

The Intersection of SEO and Accessibility

While SEO efforts primarily revolve around ensuring websites are discoverable by search engines, many of the optimisation practices also have a positive impact on website accessibility. There are several areas where SEO and accessibility overlap, including:

Page Titles: Well-crafted page titles not only enhance SEO but also help users, including those using assistive technologies, understand the content and purpose of a webpage.

• Headings: Properly structured headings aid both SEO and accessibility by providing a clear hierarchy of information on a page.

• Sitemaps: Sitemaps improve search engine crawling and indexing while also assisting users in navigating a website more effectively.

• Anchor Text: Descriptive and meaningful anchor text benefits SEO and helps users understand the context of linked content.

• Breadcrumb Links: Breadcrumbs enhance both SEO and accessibility by providing clear navigation pathways for users.

• Alt Text: Alt text for images not only benefits SEO but is crucial for conveying information to users who rely on screen readers.
